1952 Topps Baseball Set Stands Test of Time

1952 Topps baseball cards have reached almost iconic status among sports collectors.

The set has a number of factors working in its favor. It marked the young company’s first attempt at creating an all-encompassing baseball card set featuring players of the day. Topps didn’t skimp, creating 407 cards over three series.

The cards were of a size that hadn’t been seen before. The early Bowman sets were small, likely so they would be a comfortable fit in the hands of kids. But Topps took the ‘bigger is better’ approach and found a welcoming audience. That hasn’t changed. The full color ’52 Topps set is still regarded as one of the most beautiful sets ever produced.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the third series includes what many regard as the Mickey Mantle rookie card. Actually, Mantle appeared on the last series of 1951 Bowman, but it was his first appearance on a Topps card and so few exist today because of what the company did with its leftover cases of third series cards.

They dumped them into a watery grave.

It’s one hobby legend that is actually true. No one can remember whether it was into the ocean, the harbor or the Hudson River, but Topps unceremoniously disposed of a few hundred cases of the product to make room in its warehouse. The cards didn’t sell late in the year and Topps couldn’t even give them away, so overboard they went. It’s hard to believe today, but in the early 50s, cards were just kid stuff and if kids weren’t interested….

The infamous 1952 Topps dump is why any third series card—not just the Mantle rookie—is hard to find. Those in high grade are extremely expensive, even common cards.

A complete master 1952 Topps set was sold for $1.053 million earlier this year. Each was graded PSA 8. The Mickey Mantle card (#311) drew the highest bid. With a 17.5% buyer\'s premium tacked on, the winner paid $98,177 for the Mantle card. It\'s likely the second highest price ever paid at public auction for a Mantle in that grade.

Another popular card in the set is the 1952 Topps Andy Pafko. Few #1 cards in vintage sets survive in high grade, partly because they were usually on top of a stack and thus were subject to rubber band indentations and a lot of handling.

Collecting 1952 Topps Baseball Cards on a Budget

Looking at the overall value of the set or the prices paid for Mickey Mantle rookie cards can scare some people off, but it’s possible to collect 1952 Topps baseball cards on a budget.

No matter if you decide to piece together as much of the set as you possibly can or just certain elements, there’s no need to avoid chasing what may be one of the most satisfying and challenging experiences you’ll have.

I’ve owned several 1952 Topps cards that have been professionally graded as Excellent (5) and they’ve been very pleasing to the eye. If I were starting to collect the set, cards in VG-EX or EX condition is what I’d shoot for. Yes, it’s possible to acquire the set much faster by going after low grade cards, but I still prefer to not have my cards full of creases, badly rounded corners or other issues. It’s such an attractive set that it seems a shame not to be at least a little particular—at least with the commons and minor stars.

1952 Topps cards are oversized and prone to condition issues, but by shopping around carefully, and focusing on graded cards, you can eliminate some of the guesswork. Some collectors shy away from mid-grade cards and “4”, “5” and even “6” graded cards often sell for well below the established price guide value. You may not find huge bargains among the high numbers because of competition, but start with the first three series and you’ll build a nice grouping.

Buying graded or ungraded in lots via auction is a smart way to build too. Just be sure you ask questions about the grade of the cards if it's a concern to you. Many collectors try to build a set and give up, figuring it's a lost cause. Jump on those lots and you'll often get a good deal.

If collecting the complete set just isn’t in the cards (sorry), you can always decide to just enjoy building a team set, a collection of affordable Hall of Famers like Richie Ashburn or Monte Irvin or you can get a little more creative and use the set to tell the story of the season.

Cards of the MVPs of the 1952 season are pretty reasonable. Bobby Shantz was the AL MVP and Hank Sauer of the Cubs won the NL award for a great year at the plate. Both can be found in EX to NM condition for under $100. Carl Erskine and Virgil Trucks threw no-hitters in ’52 and their cards are also reasonably priced. Robin Roberts was the Player of the Year and Ferris Fain led the AL in hitting. Bob Feller’s ’52 Topps card is very reasonably priced. The Hall of Famer threw a 1-hitter in 1952—and lost 1-0 to Bob Cain who did the same.

1952 Topps cards represent the dawn of modern baseball card collecting history. The company’s first set is a landmark that doesn’t have to be entirely for guys with a lot of discretionary income.

1952 Topps Wax Packs Are Rare, Expensive

It seems unfathomable, but not every pack of decades-old baseball cards has been opened. 1952 Topps wax packs are out there--and among the most sought after nostalgia items in the baseball card market.

Topps' first issue changed the world of baseball cards forever. Once confined to small square or rectangular sizes, Topps blew up their high quality cards into a size that impressed kids. In fact, the front of the '52 Topps wrapper advertises "Giant Size" cards inside.

The 1952 Topps packs are red, green and white with the word "baseball" in the middle of a baseball image. The waxy paper wrapper conceals either one card and a stick of gum in the penny packs or five cards and gum in the nickel packs. The 1-cent packs are tougher to find than the nickel packs, but it's safe to say only a few dozen likely exist--if that many.

There was a 1980s find of early 1950s wax and that's where most of today's stock likely comes from. A few have survived in collections and by now, most have been graded by PSA, GAI or Beckett.

They're not cheap. In 2008, a PSA 5 nickel pack sold for $4406 at auction. In 2009, another, higher grade nickel pack went for $14,406 and in the summer of 2010, a PSA 8 example brought $21,404 for Memory Lane Auctions in California. A penny pack sold recently in another major auction for $3231.

On occasion, they do pop up on eBay. Display boxes are also hard to find but do come up for bid once in awhile. 1952 Topps wax packs make a great addition to an advanced collection. But can you resist the temptation to open one?

1952 Bowman Baseball

The 1952 Bowman Baseball set, though overshadowed by the seminal 1952 Topps set, stands in its own right as a set from one of baseball’s greatest eras. The complete set contains 252 cards, including significant players (like Stan Musial) not signed by Topps for 1952. High-number cards in this set (#217-252) are more collectable.

The 1952 Bowman cards are similar in design to Bowman’s 1951 issue, each card measuring 2 1/16” x 3 1/8”. Some believe that the design similarity between 1951 and 1952 may have hurt Bowman’s chances to compete with Topps in the longer run. Bowman’s 1951 and 1952 designs are nearly identical except that the 1952 Bowman design features facsimile autographs on the card’s face. Although Bowman responded to Topps’ 1952 issue with its stunning, larger-sized color set of 1953, it would never regain the foothold of popularity that it had in 1951 and previous years.

While significant rookie cards are missing in the Bowman set—Minnie Minoso may be the most notable rookie in a class that also includes Gil McDougald, Billy Loes and the high number Lew Burdette—there are two major second-year issues. The 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle (#101) contains a Mantle portrait that stands on its own as stellar artwork. Willie Mays (#218) is the other key second-year issue. These two cards are the keys to completing the 1952 Bowman Baseball set.

The first two cards in the 1952 Bowman Baseball set are very rare in high quality, and their star-quality makes them highly sought. Card #1 is Yogi Berra, and #2 is Bobby Thomson, whose “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” swept the Giants into the World Series at the end of the 1951 season. Other star cards in the 1952 Bowman set are noteworthy as the players were not signed to a Topps contract that year. These include Musial, Nellie Fox, George Kell and Ralph Kiner. (Ted Williams, of course, was absent from either Topps or Bowman set in 1952 as he was flying fighter jets in Korea.)

The 1952 Bowman baseball set is a comparatively affordable set from baseball’s golden years that offers collectors a fabulous opportunity to piece together baseball history.

1952 Topps Finds Yield Legendary Cards

Some of the highest grade 1952 Topps cards have great stories behind them. Many of those involve great finds.

In 1986, Alan Rosen, known as Mr. Mint in hobby circles, was invited to a man\'s home. No doubt expecting to see the usual nicks and dings older cards often displayed, Rosen was shocked to find the man bringing out a silver tray full of dozens of 1952 Topps cards including a stack of three dozen Mickey Mantle cards. It seems the father of the man with the cards had worked at a toy company back in the 1950s and the cards were used as prizes. The leftovers stayed in the family, preserved in gorgeous mint condition. Rosen paid the man $90,000 according to long-time collector Marshall Fogel who wrote about it on a hobby message board several years ago.

Rosen put the higher grade 1952 Topps Mantle cards up for sale at $3500 but found few buyers. The others were $2000. He eventually lowered the price on the high grade Mantles. The find yielded the only PSA 10-graded 1952 Topps Mantle, likely now the second most valuable baseball card in the world. Fogel owns it. He paid $121,000 for it several years ago after it first sold for $8,000 in the late 1980s.

In the early 90s, the only PSA 10 graded 1952 Topps Andy Pafko (card #1) came out of an unopened pack find at a hobby shop. It was believed to have originally come from an unopened pack find in Seattle.

One interesting note about the 1952 Topps first series: the first 80 cards can be found with black blacks. It seems Topps began the printing process with that color but found it to lack excitement so they switched to red to liven up the backs. The first series can be found with black or red backs with the black backs selling for a bit of a premium today.

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle: Looking to Own One?

Some believe the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle is the most popular baseball card of all-time. A picture-perfect presentation of a star being born in New York, the Mantle card is a favorite of those seeking to invest in sports memorabilia and also of those who understand its significance in the hobby.

Mickey Mantle, of course, was immensely popular as a player during the 1950s and 60s. Mantle won seven World Series rings during his career, all of which was spent playing for the Yankees. He was a popular speaker and card show guest throughout the 1980s and early 1990s before his death.

The ’52 Mantle is one of the top three or four sports cards of all-time for a virtually never-ending list of reasons, highlighted by a few key factors:

It’s Mantle-- a living legend who enjoyed immense favor with the baby boomers now edging into retirement.

It’s not an easy card to find because Topps dumped many of the final series cards that year into the ocean just to get them out of the warehouse.

It’s part of an iconic set that continues to grow in popularity with collectors and investors.

It’s proven to be a solid investment.

Always wanted a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle but couldn’t take the plunge? You’re not alone. It’s a great-looking card; one of those that even casual or non-collecting sports fans are aware of on some level because of the publicity that often accompanies the sale of a high grade copy.

If you’re ready to invest in a 1952 Topps Mantle, we’d recommend some comparison shopping, of course. Knowledge is power and if you know where the market is, you’ll get a better deal. But don’t expect to find one at bargain basement prices. Demand still far outweighs supply.

You can see what a difference even one grade can make, assuming the graders to a consistent job, and sometimes a qualifier such as off-center or miscut can impact a grade significantly. Beauty, after all, is still in the eye of the beholder. Those prices represent a significant jump over what 1952 Topps Mantle cards were selling for five or six years ago.

You can do an eBay search to find out what prices are being asked on the cards that are out there and do a completed items search for some which may have sold. They’re almost always on the market. That’s the good news!

The general rule on buying vintage baseball cards is to buy the best you can afford. The card will appreciate. The cards which see the biggest jump in value are almost always those in the highest grades. A PSA 8 topped $100,000 for the first time in an auction in 2009.

1952 Topps Mantle cards are often found with condition issues, whether it’s poor centering or simply wear from being well-loved. The good news is that you can own one without a lot of hunting, in virtually any condition and the bottom won’t be dropping out of the market anytime soon.

We’d recommend buying only a graded 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle because of the issues with altered cards or those which have been counterfeited. You can click here to see what's available on eBay and there should be plenty of options. Even if the graders aren’t uniformly consistent, at least what you see is what you’ll get. It will also be easier to sell down the road if you must. Just don’t stick the slab in your bike spokes.

Collecting Hall of Famers from the 52 Topps Set

While virtually every card in the 1952 Topps baseball set carries value, there are several cards which represent Hall of Famers.

The early 50s produced a convergence of stars who had debuted in the 1930s including Bob Feller (whose 1952 Topps card is relatively inexpensive), former Negro Leaguers who had broken the color barrier just a few years earlier like Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, etc, veteran players like Spahn, Berra, Wynn and Hodges, plus the new stars such as Mantle, Mays and Jackie Jensen.

If budgetary concerns won’t allow you to chase the entire set, working on a run of these Cooperstown-worthy names might be a way to get involved in collecting it.

Topps didn’t have Ted Williams or Stan Musial under contract since they had exclusive deals with Bowman and Whitey Ford was off serving in the Korean War so the Yankee ace isn’t included either.In recent years, Topps printed some “cards that never were” featuring the missing legends.

1952 Topps Reprint Set: An Affordable Alternative

Even in the early 1980s, collectors were finding it cost prohibitive to buy high grade originals so the company set out to create a complete 1952 Topps reprint set.

Issued in 1983 and sold to sports card dealers by the case, the 52 Topps reprints came in a blue box and is the first reprint set issued by Topps. It's really considered a classic in its own right today, even though the cards will never be confused with the original 1952 baseball series.

The 1952 Topps reprints were reduced from the original card size to the modern day standard 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 measurement. The reprint set contains 402 of the original 407 cards from the ’52 Topps set. Topps wasn’t able to secure the agreements necessary to produce #20 Loes, #22 Dom DiMaggio, #159 Rogovin, #196 Hemus and #289 Holmes.

This 1952 Topps Reprint Set usually comes in the original blue factory box issued by Topps. Sets included a blue sticker folded over the top to indicate a factory seal. While many were obviously opened to be enjoyed, many remain unopened and they do carry a slight price premium. Most of us might prefer to know exactly what we’re getting though! Generally, Topps did a pretty fair job with the quality control on this set, which wasn’t cheap when it was issued in 1983.

Of course the set is loaded with many stars and important cards made popular in the original including #1 Pafko, Rizzuto, Spahn, Hodges, Snider, Page, Sain, Lopat, Roberts, Slaughter, Reynolds, Feller, Schoendienst, Mize, Martin, Berra, Minoso, Bauer, Ashburn, Erskine, Mays, Mantle, Wynn, Robinson, Campanella, Reese, Adcock, Mathews, Nuxhull, Dickey, and Groat.

The 1952 Topps Reprint set is another way to enjoy the first-ever issue from the Topps company and with complete sets available for around $100, it’s a nice little set to own.

1952 Topps black backs typically command a slight premium in the market. These cards occur on the first print runs of cards numbered 1-80 only. Cards #1-80, as well as #81-407, were subsequently printed with both black and red backs. While it is assumed that Topps printed equal numbers of black and black/red backs of the lower series, black backs are now more desired by collectors.

Records of Topps printing runs are not detailed for the 1952 series; Topps did not generally release records of printing in the 1950s. Some sources indicate that Topps officials thought that the all-black backs affected the quality of the card fronts, leading to the printing color change in the first series.

Black backs also play a prominent role in the major error of the 1952 Topps set. The errors of #48 Joe Page (with Johnny Sain’s writeup on the back) and #49 Johnny Sain (with Joe Page’s writeup on the back) both have black backs. The error was corrected in subsequent print runs that included black/red backs.

The 1952 Topps black backs provide a snapshot into the nature of baseball card production in the 1950s, as Topps had to constantly make adjustments during card production. Today, the black backs remain highly collectible and the more desired of the tough low numbers in the 1952 Topps set.
